U = F' + V' + x + N

F' = students that plays football(F) - students that plays both (x)

F' = F - x

= 24 - x

V' = students that plays Volleyball (V) - students that plays both (x)

V' = V - x

= 18 - x

Therefore

40 = (24 - x) + x + (18 - x) + 6

40 = 24 - x + x + 18 - x + 6

40 = 24 + 18 - x + 6

40 = 48 - x

x = 8
